CURO - AMG recorder for muscle analysis

Process

ECT was in charge of the whole process including hardware, software, mechanical design, testing, tooling, implementation in a factory and regulatory approvals for EU and USA as a veterinary device.

Challenge

The client wanted to create equipment for AMG muscle analysis. After years of studies, he found a method to pick-up acoustic signals from the muscles and through analyzes of these signals a variety of different muscle related issues can be identified.

A major challenge was to turn the client’s handmade working prototype of the Piezo sensors into a solution suitable for mass production. It was not clear which technical parameters of the Piezo that had influence on the main functionality, and it was not clear how mass-produced sensors should be calibrated or paired to support an accurate muscle measurement.

Challenge

It was not clear which technical parameters of the Piezo that had influence on the main functionality, and it was not clear how mass-produced sensors should be calibrated or paired to support an accurate muscle measurement.

Solution

ECT developed a complete full functioning solution for the client including the housing and software. The solution consists of different types of sensors and the Curo Recorder – which also can transfer live data wirelessly via WiFi to a connected mobile device. The solution also includes a special app for the mobile device, from where you can operate the Curo and display analyzed data in an intuitive User Interface.

The R&D process of the Sensors was actually quite complex. Basically, these sensors work on the edge of physical technology. A Feasibility Study was conducted. This phase of the R&D process included a survey of suppliers of Piezo elements and a detailed technological discussion with them to understand the different technical parameters in relation to this particular product. Also different coating/molding techniques were analyzed and tested, and the most suitable was chosen. ECT’s mechanical engineering designed molding tools and together with the vendor the most suitable molding material was chosen. For testing in the factory special test equipment was developed. This equipment simulates the muscle operation, and we found that special materials were needed to make the test equipment work similar to real tissue and muscles.

In relation to recording and transferring data, ECT developed the Curo. This device includes a WiFi access point through which the live muscle data can be streamed to a mobile device. Through an app installed on a mobile device, specially developed for the purpose, it is possible to analyze the data, and present the results in a user-friendly format.

ECT worked with 3rd party Accredited Test Lab to get an appropriate test report showing conformity to EU and US regulations.

Because of the major difference in technology between the Sensors and the Curo, ECT installed the finished product for mass production in two different factories. All specifications and testing equipment was handed over to the factory for the client to order finished product himself without the need to involve ECT.
